Getting the nursery ready: a third-trimester checklist
A nursery doesn't need to be big or perfect. It needs to be safe, simple and easy to use at 3 a.m.
Start with the sleep space
For the first six months, the AAP recommends your baby sleep in your room, so you may set up a bassinet by your bed first and the crib later. Either way:
- Choose a crib or bassinet that meets current federal safety standards. Avoid cribs with drop sides and older cribs made before current standards.
- Use a firm, flat mattress that fits snugly, with no more than two fingers' width between the mattress and the frame.
- Use a fitted sheet only. No bumpers, pillows, blankets or soft toys.
- Place the crib away from windows, blind cords, heaters, lamps and wall shelves.
The changing area
- A sturdy changing table or a dresser with a changing pad and a safety strap.
- Diapers, wipes and cream within reach, so you never need to step away from your baby.
- A small basket for clean clothes and a hamper nearby.
Feeding corner
- A comfortable chair or glider with good back support.
- A side table for water, burp cloths and a phone.
- A dim, warm night light.

Storage
Babies come with a lot of small things. Baskets, drawer dividers and a few open bins keep diapers, clothes and swaddles easy to grab.
Safety checks before baby arrives
- Anchor all furniture to the wall, including dressers, bookcases and changing tables.
- Keep cords from monitors, lamps and blinds out of reach of the crib.
- Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas.
- Check every hand-me-down item against the CPSC recall list.
- Keep the room comfortably cool, and dress your baby in no more than one layer more than you'd wear.
Make it yours
Soft colors, a few framed prints hung well away from the crib, and blackout curtains for naps go a long way. Wash new bedding and clothes before use.
Don't forget the car seat
Install your infant car seat by about 36 weeks and have it checked if you can.
